DBFLF Legal + Business Support Services

The Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund,
in collaboration with the Detroit Farmer Collective, is launching a new Legal and Business Support program for farmers!

This program is designed to support Black Farmers and Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund awardees on the journey to building strong sustainable farms, by providing funding for some of the unseen yet vital tools and guidance needed to navigate the complexities of the agricultural industry. This program offers expert assistance in areas such as secure land ownership, business structuring, permits and City compliance, contracts, and financial planning. By equipping farmers with tailored legal and business resources, DBFLF empowers them to build sustainable and thriving agricultural enterprises.

We are accepting funding request from awardees for professional services, connecting farmers to the following Legal and Business support services:

  • Administrative Support: Professional Helping you manage day-to-day operations.

  • Human Resources: Assistance with building and managing your team.

  • Urban Ag Permitting: Guidance on obtaining the necessary City permits for your farm.

  • Property Title Consulting: Ensure your land ownership is secure.

  • Marketing: Strategies to grow your outreach and sales.

  • Finance: Support with budgeting and financial planning.

  • Org Structure Incorporation: Establish your farm’s legal structure.

  • Grant Writing Support: Unlock funding opportunities.

  • USDA Support: Help navigating USDA programs and applications.

  • Legal Support: help small business owners achieve their goals with expert advice and skilled representation. Contract reviewing , suggesting preventive measures to avoid legal disputes. 

  • Crop Planning: Crop planning will provide you with a roadmap on what, when and how much you will be planting for the next season

  • Notary: a publicly commissioned official who serves as an impartial witness to the signing of a legal document. Document signings where the services of a notary are generally necessary are real estate deeds, affidavits, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, bills of sale, or other official transactional documents

 

How Does It Work 

  • Growers will complete an intake form indicating the services you need and if you need to be connected to a service provider.

  • Growers will be connected with a service provider and a “Scope of work” will be developed.

  • Once services are complete the Service Provider will invoice “Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund “ for Legal and Business Services performed.  

  • We ask that our Service Providers and Farmers complete a Follow up survey ( sent out after Services are complete )
